Dr Bhengu has been a Medical practitioner and anaesthetist since 1991. He worked for just over five years as a full-time clinician in South Africa and England. Thereafter he worked as a senior health care industry executive, director of companies and advisor to various South African Government Departments.

He is a Chartered Director (SA): Institute of Directors in Southern Africa; Panel Member of the Competition Commission’s Healthcare Market Inquiry, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Road Accident Fund, Non-Executive Director of Nestle (SA) (Pty) Ltd, and Fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative.

He holds a Master of Public Health degree, Master of Business Administration, Diploma in Anaesthetics, and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB).
