Professor Mohammad Karaan

Prof Mohammad Karaan is Professor in Agricultural Economics at Stellenbosch University. He graduated from Stellenbosch with a BScAgric degree and later completed a MScAgric in 1994, and a PhD (Agric) in 2006. He joined the Development Bank of Southern Africa as an economist and thereafter jointed the Rural Foundation as Head of Research. In 1996 he joined Stellenbosch University as a lecturer in the Faculty of Agriculture. In October 2008 he became Dean of the Faculty of AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University and reappointed November 2013 for a second term. From 1 May 2014 until 31 May 2015, Prof Karaan served as Acting Vice-Rector.

He serve(d) the public sector in the following capacities:
  • Chair of the National Agricultural Marketing Council (2005-2007)
  • Coordinator of an executive training program for African agribusinesses
  • President of the Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa (2008-2009)
  • Member of the National Planning Commission (May 2010 to July 2015; reappointed from 1 September 2015 for a period of 5 years)
  • Director of The Landbank
  • Board of the Agricultural Research Council
  • Chaired a Ministerial Committee to review the Agricultural Marketing Act
  • Served on the Ministerial Consultative Advisory Board on Fisheries
  • Member of Presidential Inter-Ministerial Committee on Land Reform
  • Member of Management Committee of the Bureau for Economic Research
